Travel & Accomodation
Getting to Bochum
Train service disruption: Bochum Central Station (“Bochum Hbf”) will be closed to all major train lines during HARRIS 2025, see below for details.
Plane: Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is the largest airport in the area. Other airports in the area include Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN; longer travel distance to Bochum) and Dortmund Airport (DTM; closest to Bochum, but fewer flights).
Car: Bochum can be conveniently reached by car via the major highways A40 and A43 and the city highway A448. During rush hour, expect traffic jams and delays all over the Ruhr area.
Train: Bochum is used to be well-connected to the German high-speed rail network operated by the fast ICE and the slower IC trains. Unfortunately, due to construction work, Bochum Central Station will be cut off from all major train lines during the workshop week, except for local public transport. Regional trains and high-speed trains will not stop in Bochum (linked construction notices available in German only).
As an alternative, travel to Essen or Dortmund and take the local line S1 to Bochum (see timetable). Additionally, rail replacement buses (see station map) are available. Refer to the official railroad website to check for connections.
Getting to University
Public Transport: Bochum main station is served by numerous regional and long-distance trains. You can plan your journey at int.bahn.de. From Bochum main station, the U35 subway (direction: “Hustadt”) operates frequently and gets you to university campus via the “Ruhr Universität” station in around 10 minutes (see next U35 departures).
Car: Ruhr University is located right at “Universitätsstraße” which connects the campus to city center and the A43 highway. Plenty of free parking is available in the P12 and P13 parking garages on the west side of the campus. Avoid other parking lots if possible as they usually reach capacity around 9 am.
Bikes & Scooters: A cheap alternative to the U35 subway is taking a bike or scooter to get to the RUB campus. Bikes can be rented from metropolradruhr at one of their many stations across the city. Scooters can be rented from Tier, Lime, and Voi. There is a dedicated bike lane from city center to the campus.
Getting to the Venue
Veranstaltungszentrum (VZ)
The workshop itself is held in the university’s convention center aka. “Veranstaltungszentrum” (VZ). Please refer to the campus map below to find your way to the venue from (A) the P12 and P13 parking garages or from (B) the U35 station “Ruhr Universität”. We will also put up signs and offer pick-ups from (A) and (B) in the morning on March 17, 2025. Finding your way around the campus is not easy, so we strongly recommend taking advantage of these offers.
Livingroom Restaurant
The workshop dinner on Monday, March 17, 2025 will take place in the restaurant Livingroom in the city center.
Public Transport: From university campus, take the U35 and get off at Bochum Hbf (main station). Buy a single-ride A3 ticket (3,60€) at the campus station before riding. Exit through the station’s main entrance, cross the wide road in front of the train station and turn left immediately. Turn right at Luisenstraße, the restaurant will be on your right side after around 100m.
Car: You can park your car in garage P2 (“Dr.-Ruer-Platz”), the entrance can be found in Luisenstraße right next to the Livingroom. Please note that many parking garages in Bochum are connected by tunnels, so try not to get lost underground. Overnight parking (between 6pm and 10am) costs just €4, so you can even leave your car there until the next morning. Note, however, that the parking garage is closed (no exit) between midnight and 6:30am.
